Introduction:

The School of Health Professions, part of the Arizona Health Sciences Center, educates students for careers in health professions in the university, hospital, and community sectors.  Its programs in physiological sciences and medical technology provide science-based preparation for researchers, health professionals, laboratory technicians, and educators working to promote health and prevent disease.  The School's programs also prepare students to pursue graduate-level studies in biological sciences or in health care professions, such as medicine or physical therapy.

Medical Technology Major:

The Division of Medical Technology provides professional preparation for a career in medical technology, which is also called clinical laboratory science. This health profession is responsible for clinical laboratory analyses, including quantitative, qualitative and morphological measurements which assist the physician in clinical diagnosis and treatment.

Physiological Sciences Major:

The undergraduate Physiological Sciences major is designed for individuals who, following completion of their four-year degree, plan to continue their studies at the graduate level in such areas as physiology, medicine, dentistry, or another of the wide range of academic, research, or health care professions. Majors receive basic grounding in calculus and the biological and physical sciences, and more extensive instruction in the physiological sciences such as advanced human physiology, cell physiology, endocrine physiology, exercise and environmental physiology, cardiovascular physiology, and neurophysiology.

Admissions and Advanced Standing:

Pre-majors in medical technology and physiological sciences are admitted to University College while completing prerequisites.  Admission to the pre-major does not guarantee admission to advanced standing.  Applicants to the School of Health Professions must have completed a minimum of 56 units of college credit, applicable to a baccalaureate degree, and must have a GPA of 2.25 or higher to be considered for admission.  Acceptance in the School is contingent upon admission into a specific major, is competitive, and requires completion of specified prerequisite courses.  Pre-major students should contact an academic advisor in the major for additional admissions requirements.
