Information Resources and Library Science (IRLS)  Department Info

IRLS 116 -- Introduction to Microcomputers  (3 units)
Description:  Examination of microcomputers in the information environment. Emphasis on hardware and software concepts.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.

IRLS 400 -- Social Constructs of Information  (3 units)
Description:  Introduction to information as it is used and defined by society. Geography of information, economics of information, and intellectual property concerns.
May be convened with:  IRLS 500.

IRLS 401 -- Knowledge Structures I  (3 units)
Description:  Introduction to the theories and practices used in the organization of information. Overview of national and international standards and practices for access to information in collections.
May be convened with:  IRLS 501.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

IRLS 404 -- Foundations of Library and Information Services  (3 units)
Description:  Elements of librarianship, historical backgrounds, types of libraries, the role of the library in American life, current issues.
May be convened with:  IRLS 504.

IRLS 411 -- Information Storage and Retrieval  (3 units)
Description:  Student involvement in on-line interactive systems.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

IRLS 424 -- Information Resources Evaluation  (3 units)
Description:  Methods of evaluation of information resources in society. Development of terms and functions for evaluation.
Course includes 1 or more field trips.
May be convened with:  IRLS 524.

IRLS 441 -- Children's Literature in Spanish  (3 units)
Description:  contact department.
Identical to:  SPAN 441 ; SPAN is home department.

IRLS 443 -- Knowledge and Society  (3 units)
Description:  Social and interpersonal processes affecting the acquisition and diffusion of knowledge. Emphasis on philosophical perspectives, with interdisciplinary borrowings.
Prerequisite(s):  one course in philosophy.
Identical to:  PHIL 443 ; PHIL is home department.

IRLS 460 -- Information Resource Development  (3 units)
Description:  Principles of identifying, selecting, acquiring, managing, and evaluating information resources for particular demographic areas.
May be convened with:  IRLS 560.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.

IRLS 475 -- Human Factors in Information Systems  (3 units)
Description:  Study of the human-information system interface: computers, human information processing.
May be convened with:  IRLS 575.
Usually offered:  Fall.

IRLS 481 -- School Library Administration and Organization  (3 units)
Description:  Services, finances, personnel, evaluation, quarters, organization and technical services in the school library.
May be convened with:  IRLS 581.
Usually offered:  Spring.

IRLS 493 -- Internship  (1-6 units)
Description:  Specialized work on an individual basis, consisting of training and practice in actual service in a technical, business, or governmental establishment.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.

IRLS 494 -- Practicum  (2-3 units)
Description:  The practical application, on an individual basis, of previously studied theory and the collection of data for future theoretical interpretation.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.

IRLS 498 -- Senior Capstone  (1-3 units)
Description:  A culminating experience for majors involving a substantive project that demonstrates a synthesis of learning accumulated in the major, including broadly comprehensive knowledge of the discipline and its methodologies. Senior standing required.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

IRLS 499 -- Independent Study  (1-6 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise such work.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.

IRLS 500 -- Social Constructs of Information  (3 units)
Description:  Introduction to information as it is used and defined by society. Geography of information, economics of information, and intellectual property concerns. Graduate-level requirements involve extra readings and in-depth exams.

IRLS 520 -- Ethics for Information Professionals  (3 units)
Description:  Study of the basics of ethical theory and its application to problems in information management. Application and development of ethical codes in cases studies.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.

IRLS 524 -- Information Resources Evaluation  (3 units)
Description:  Methods of evaluation of information resources in society. Development of terms and functions for evaluation. Graduate-level requirements involve extra readings and in-depth exams.
May be convened with:  IRLS 424.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.

IRLS 543 -- Knowledge and Society  (3 units)
Description:  Social and interpersonal processes affecting the acquisition and diffusion of knowledge. Emphasis on philosophical perspectives, with interdisciplinary borrowings. Graduate-level requirements include an in-depth research paper on a central theme or topic of the course.
Identical to:  PHIL 543 ; PHIL is home department.
May be convened with:  IRLS 443.

IRLS 560 -- Information Resource Development  (3 units)
Description:  Principles of identifying, selecting, acquiring, managing, and evaluating information resources for particular demographic areas. Graduate-level requirements involve extra readings and in-depth exams.
May be convened with:  IRLS 460.

IRLS 572 -- Government Information: Policy and Resources  (3 units)
Description:  To consider information policies and resources of the government of the United States and to develop an understanding of how those policies have evolved, and how they affect both the political system, the average citizen, and the overall structure of information dissemination in this country.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

IRLS 575 -- Human Factors in Information Systems  (3 units)
Description:  Study of the human-information system interface: computers, human information processing. Graduate-level requirements include groupwork and longer examinations.
May be convened with:  IRLS 475.
Usually offered:  Fall.

IRLS 581 -- School Library Administration and Organization  (3 units)
Description:  Services, finances, personnel, evaluation, quarters, organization and technical services in the school library. Graduate-level requirements include a greater number of assignments and a higher level of performance.
May be convened with:  IRLS 481.

IRLS 587 -- Information Seeking Behaviors  (3 units)
Description:  Information-seeking theories, methods, and user behaviors will be covered in order to gain an understanding of how different groups of people seek, gather and retrieve information in a variety of information environments. Information-seeking behavior draws on literature from library and information science, psychology, and communications.
Usually offered:  Fall.

IRLS 588 -- Issues in Information Resources  (3 units)
Description:  Examines problems associated with current issues in information resources and other information centers.
May be repeated:  for a total of 12 units of credit.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

IRLS 589 -- Scholarly Communication  (3 units)
Description:  Structure and workings of scholarly communication and products in the U.S. Examines the content and technology of scholarly communication in various disciplines.
Identical to:  COMM 589.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

IRLS 593L -- Legislative Internship  (1-9 units)
Description:  Working experience at the Arizona State Legislature; responsibilities draw upon student's area of major expertise and include preparing written and oral reports, summarizing legislative proposals, and providing information to legislators and legislative committees. Participating programs include but are not limited to: architecture, economics, English, geography and regional development, history, hydrology, journalism, management, management information systems, marketing, political science, psychology, public administration, secondary education, sociology, statistics, and urban planning. Students in other programs are eligible and should consult the department head or, in the case of the James E. Roger's College of Law, the dean, for appropriate arrangements.

IRLS 596K -- Methods and Materials of Literary Research  (3 units)
Description:  The development and exchange of scholarly information, usually in a small group setting. The scope of work shall consist of research by course registrants, with the exchange of the results of such research through discussion, reports, and/or papers.
May be repeated:  for credit 1 time (maximum 2 enrollments).
Identical to:  ENGL 596K; ENGL is home department.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

IRLS 600 -- Introduction to Graduate Studies in Music  (3 units)
Description:  Bibliographical materials; research resources, techniques, and problems directed toward graduate study in music.
Prerequisite(s):  required of all doctoral candidates in music.
Identical to:  MUS 600 ; MUS is home department.
Usually offered:  Fall.

IRLS 601 -- Knowledge Structures II  (3 units)
Description:  Theory of classification, subject approaches to information, and advanced data coding.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

IRLS 606 -- Research Methods II  (3 units)
Description:  Regression and correlation techniques, analysis of variants, advanced techniques. Emphasis on research and problem solving in information agencies.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

IRLS 608 -- Planning and Evaluation of Information Centers  (3 units)
Description:  The planning/evaluation cycle as an approach to assessing various information center services.
Usually offered:  Spring.

IRLS 612 -- Expert Systems in Information Resources  (3 units)
Description:  Examines the role and place of expert systems. Emphasis on development of knowledge-based systems.
Usually offered:  Spring.

IRLS 613 -- Systems Analysis and Evaluation  (3 units)
Description:  Introduction to quantitative methods for analyzing and evaluating the effectiveness of the various systems that make up an information service such as a library.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

IRLS 614 -- Information Theory and Transfer  (3 units)
Description:  Nature of information in the social setting. Examines the use, value, and relevance of information as well as the dispersion of information through open and closed systems.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

IRLS 617 -- Social Epistemology and Information Science  (3 units)
Description:  Applies various theories of knowledge to information science. Emphasis on identifying practices that information services such as libraries can adopt to facilitate the acquisition of knowledge.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

IRLS 622 -- Advanced Information Resources  (3 units)
Description:  Principles of evaluating information exchanges and sources. Possible topics include the verification of the accuracy of the information and the evaluation of resources in specialized subject domains.
May be repeated:  for a total of 9 units of credit.

IRLS 624 -- Health and Medical Informatics  (3 units)
Description:  Information systems used in health and medical settings. Particular attention is given to the integration of traditional and nontraditional methods of information transfer.

IRLS 688 -- Advanced Issues in Information Resources  (3 units)
Description:  Topics vary. Problems associated with current issues in information resources and information centers.
May be repeated:  for a total of 9 units of credit.

IRLS 696D -- Current Resources in School Libraries  (3 units)
Description:  The development and exchange of scholarly information, usually in a small group setting. The scope of work shall consist of research by course registrants, with the exchange of the results of such research through discussion, reports, and/or papers.
Usually offered:  Summer.

IRLS 696E -- Information Resources  (3 units)
Description:  The development and exchange of scholarly information, usually in a small group setting. The scope of work shall consist of research by course registrants, with the exchange of the results of such research through discussion, reports, and/or papers.
May be repeated:  for credit 1 time (maximum 2 enrollments).
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

IRLS 699 -- Independent Study  (1-6 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise such work. Graduate students doing independent work which cannot be classified as actual research will register for credit under course number 599, 699, or 799.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.

IRLS 796A -- Advanced Topics in Information Resources  (3 units)
Description:  The development and exchange of scholarly information, usually in a small group setting. The scope of work shall consist of research by course registrants, with the exchange of the results of such research through discussion, reports, and/or papers.
May be repeated:  for credit 10 times (maximum 11 enrollments).
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

IRLS 900 -- Research  (1-9 units)
Description:  Individual research, not related to thesis or dissertation preparation, by graduate students.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.

IRLS 910 -- Thesis  (1-6 units)
Description:  Research for the master's thesis (whether library research, laboratory or field observation or research, artistic creation, or thesis writing). Maximum total credit permitted varies with the major department.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.

IRLS 920 -- Dissertation  (1-9 units)
Description:  Research for the doctoral dissertation (whether library research, laboratory or field observation or research, artistic creation, or dissertation writing).
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

IRLS 930 -- Supplementary Registration  (1-9 units)
Description:  For students who have completed all course requirements for their advanced degree programs. May be used concurrently with other enrollments to bring to total number of units to the required minimum.
