SERP 200 -- Social Perspectives on Disability as Reflected in American Media and Literature  (3 units)
Description:  Enrolled students will identify and describe perspectives on disability as reflected in American media and literature. They will analyze the influence of these perspectives on individual, political, and social responses to persons with disabilities.
Approved as:  General Education Tier Two - Individuals and Societies.

SERP 299 -- Independent Study  (3 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise such work.

SERP 301A -- Mainstreaming - Elementary  (2 units)
Description:  Introduction to the integration of special students into the regular elementary.
Prerequisite(s):  TTE 322, TTE 323, TTE 324, TTE 326, TTE 327. Open to elementary education majors currently enrolled in student teaching only.
Special exam:  course may be taken by special exam for credit and grade.

SERP 301B -- Mainstreaming - Secondary  (2 units)
Description:  Introduction to the integration of special students into the regular secondary classrooms.
Prerequisite(s):  TTE 322, TTE 323, TTE 324, TTE 326, TTE 327. Open to elementary education majors currently enrolled in student teaching only.

SERP 370A -- American Sign Language I  (4 units)
Description:  Designed for students with no previous knowledge of ASL and/or deaf culture. To develop basic skills in ASL vocabulary, grammar and use. First course in a four semester sequence.
Usually offered:  Fall.

SERP 370B -- American Sign Language II  (4 units)
Description:  Designed to help students continue developing basic skills in ASL vocabulary, grammar and use. Second course in a four semester sequence.
Prerequisite(s):  SERP 370A or consent of the department.

SERP 394 -- Practicum  (1-3 units)
Description:  The practical application, on an individual basis, of previously studied theory and the collection of data for future theoretical interpretation.

SERP 399 -- Independent Study  (1-3 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise such work.

SERP 400 -- Survey of Special Education and Rehabilitation  (3 units)
Description:  Introduction to historical, legal, pedagogical, and social issues underlying services in special education and rehabilitation. Provides an overview of the characteristics of persons with exceptionalities and disabilities as well as the services available.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

SERP 401A -- Assessment and Instruction or Students with Early Reading and Spelling Difficult  (3 units)
Description:  Procedures, methods, strategies for informal diagnosis and instruction of students with learning problems in the areas of reading and spelling. Strategies appropriate for use in the elementary or the special classroom.
May be convened with:  SERP 501A.

SERP 401B -- Assessment and Instruction for Preschool Children with Learning Problems  (3 units)
Description:  Procedures, methods, strategies for assessment and instruction of children with learning problems in the preschool years. Strategies and adaptations for use with delays in physical development, cognitive development, communication development, socioemotional development, and the development of adaptive behavior will be emphasized.
Prerequisite(s):  SERP 400, SERP 460, SERP 575.

SERP 402 -- Behavior Principles and Disability  (3 units)
Description:  Use of behavior principles to positively support individuals with disabilities, especially those with moderate and severe disabilities.
Prerequisite(s):  SERP 400.

SERP 403 -- Special Services in Schools  (3 units)
Description:  Information to aid teachers in dealing with responsibilities and concerns in school settings with regard to P.L. 94-142. Education for All Handicapped Children Act Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, Family Education Rights and Privacy Act, and other legal issues.

SERP 404 -- Cultural and Linguistic Diversity in Exceptional Learners  (3 units)
Description:  Provides a theoretical base and practical approach to the study of special needs of students with language and cultural differences; basic premises of bilingual special education and the interface of the two fields.
May be convened with:  SERP 504.

SERP 405 -- Introduction to Learning Disabilities  (3 units)
Description:  Theories and history of programs for individuals with learning disabilities-definition, characteristics, etiology.
Prerequisite(s):  degree candidates must complete SERP 400 prior to taking SERP 405.

SERP 406 -- Foundations of Special Education  (3 units)
Description:  Introduction to historical, legal, pedagogical, and social issues underlying services in special education. Provides an overview of characteristics of persons with exceptionalities and disabilities, as well as the services available.

SERP 407A -- Methods for Diagnosing Specific Learning Disabilities  (3 units)
Description:  Assessment and instruction with an emphasis on formal assessment, informal assessment, diagnostic teaching, and implementation of individualized instructional programs.
Prerequisite(s):  Teacher Education Courses.

SERP 407B -- Methods for Diagnosing Specific Learning Disabilities  (3 units)
Description:  Continuation of SERP 407A/507A. Preparation for preservice educators to provide assessment and instruction for students with high incidence (learning and behavioral) disabilities.
May be convened with:  SERP 507B.

SERP 409 -- Introduction Learning and Behavioral Disabilities  (3 units)
Description:  Issues in the education of students with mild-moderate mental retardation, learning disabilities, emotional or behavioral disorders, attention deficit disorders, and physical disabilities. Topics include history, definitions, current issues, characteristics, theories, and educational programming.
May be convened with:  SERP 509.

SERP 410 -- Introduction to Mental Retardation and Severe Disabilities  (3 units)
Description:  History and philosophy of educational programs for persons with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities; etiology, classification, and characteristics, with consideration of educational, social, and psychological problems.
Prerequisite(s):  or Concurrent registration, SERP 400.

SERP 411 -- Service Delivery Trends in Rehabilitation and Special Education  (3 units)
Description:  Critical examination of current trends, issues and initiatives affecting service systems for persons with disabilities.
May be repeated:  for credit 1 time (maximum 2 enrollments).

SERP 415 -- Physical and Multiple Disabilities  (3 units)
Description:  Physical and multiple impairments, etiology, intervention practices, adaptations, transferring and handling skills, and integration into typical environments.
May be convened with:  SERP 515.

SERP 420 -- Low Vision and Visual Functioning  (3 units)
Description:  Anatomy and physiology of the eye; implications of visual disorders including visual field losses; introduction to optics; use of optical and non-optical aids in classroom settings.
May be convened with:  SERP 520.

SERP 421 -- Introduction to Visual Impairments and Deaf-Blindness  (3 units)
Description:  An overview of educational services for the student with visual impairments and multiple sensory impairments. An emphasis is placed on the psychosocial effects of visual impairments on the individual and means of compensating for those effects.
May be convened with:  SERP 521.

SERP 423A -- Braille I  (3 units)
Description:  Fundamentals of Braille reading and writing, methods of teaching Braille and preparation of materials.

Description:  Fundamentals of Braille reading and writing, methods of teaching Braille and preparation of materials.

SERP 424 -- Methods of Teaching the Visually Impaired  (3 units)
Description:  Curriculum development and adaptation in various educational programs; adaptation of classroom materials; procedures for use with blind/partially sighted children and youth; emphasizes teaching academic and non-academic skills and in educating students with non-disabled peers.

SERP 425 -- Strategies of Vocational Development and Supported Employment  (3 units)
Description:  Systematic study of the strategies used to place and retain individuals with disabilities in paid, community employment. Topics to include job development, consumer assessment, job placement, job-site training, and follow-up.
Prerequisite(s):  SERP 400.

SERP 430 -- Education and Rehabilitation of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Individuals  (3 units)
Description:  Current and historical perspectives; educational and rehabilitative services; etiology; impact on families, psychosocial, cognitive and intellectual development and functioning of deaf and hard of hearing individuals.
May be convened with:  SERP 530.

SERP 431A -- American Sign Language III  (4 units)
Description:  Designed to develop intermediate ASL conversational skills in a variety of settings, topics, and functions. Third in a four semester sequence.
Prerequisite(s):  SERP 370B or consent of department.

SERP 431B -- American Sign Language IV  (4 units)
Description:  Designed to continue developing intermediate ASL conversational skills in a variety of settings, topics, and functions. Final course in a four semester sequence.

SERP 433A -- Introduction to the Structure of ASL  (3 units)
Description:  Introduction to the structure of ASL. Classes will be offered on a rotating basis in SERP 433A-433B-433C-433D sequence; however, courses need not be taken in sequence.

SERP 433B -- Languages and Cultures of the Deaf Communities  (3 units)

SERP 434 -- Language Development for the Exceptional Child  (3 units)
Description:  Pragmatic, syntactic and semantic aspects of pre-linguistic and linguistic development in exceptional children and youth; cognitive and social bases of communication and language development.
Prerequisite(s):  SERP 400; admission to Undergraduate Special Education Program.

Description:  Issues in education of the emotionally or behaviorally disordered; discussion of history, current issues, definitions, characteristics, and theoretical perspectives.

SERP 453 -- Processing Skills in Interpretation and Transliteration  (3 units)
Temporary course:  offered during Fall 2002 only.
Description:  This course will focus on practical and theoretical applications of skills in American Sign Language interpretation and transliteration.

SERP 454 -- Intralingual Skills for Interpreters  (3 units)
Temporary course:  offered during Fall 2002 only.
Description:  This course will involve an in-depth study of English and American Sign Language intralingual skills for interpreters.
Prerequisite(s):  SERP 431B.

SERP 455 -- Rehabilitation and Aging  (3 units)
Description:  Emphasis on aging from the viewpoint of the aging person and those working with the aged.
May be repeated:  for credit 2 times (maximum 3 enrollments).

SERP 460 -- Introduction to Early Childhood Special Education  (3 units)
Description:  Focuses on the disabling conditions impacting on infants, toddlers and their families, preschool children, programs available to serve them and their families, and critical issues in this rapidly evolving field.

SERP 465 -- Principles of Rehabilitation  (3 units)
Description:  Principles underlying rehabilitation programs and interdisciplinary relationships of agencies engaged in rehabilitation services.

SERP 468 -- Transition Methods  (3 units)
Description:  Provides an understanding of effective strategies for promoting the smooth transition of students with disabilities from school to work and adult living.
May be convened with:  SERP 568.

SERP 475 -- Observation and Participation in Special Education Programs  (1-3 units)
Description:  Practical experiences with individuals having special needs with focus on psychological, educational and service-related implications and practices. Field trips, class observations and seminars.
Course includes 1 or more field trips.
Prerequisite(s):  SERP 400 or SERP 500.
May be repeated:  for a total of 6 units of credit.

SERP 476 -- Rehabilitating the Public Offender  (3 units)
Description:  Components in service delivery to the public offender, how the offender enters the criminal justice system, and treatment and rehabilitation services available.

SERP 478 -- Prevention of Addictions  (3 units)
Description:  Analysis of addictive behaviors (e.g., drug addictions, eating disorders, compulsive gambling) from a psychosocial and biological perspective and the implications of this analysis for primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention of addictions.

SERP 479A -- Psychiatric Rehabilitation I  (3 units)
Description:  Key approaches and current developments in psychiatric rehabilitation in the US; provision of basic information about mental illness, the rehabilitation needs of persons with psychiatric disabilities, and implications for best practice in rehabilitation settings.
May be convened with:  SERP 579A.

SERP 479B -- Introduction to Psychiatric Rehabilitation  (3 units)
Temporary course:  offered during Fall 2002 only.
Description:  Examines activities of practitioner and service recipient, and steps of the psychiatric vocational rehabilitation process used in career development for persons with psychiatric disabilities.

SERP 481 -- Interviewing and Client Services  (3 units)
Description:  The development of essential interviewing skills for case management of rehabilitation clients.
Prerequisite(s):  SERP 425 or SERP 525; SERP 400, SERP 411.

SERP 483 -- Supervised Casework in Rehabilitation  (3 units)
Description:  Application of fundamental professional rehabilitation theories and skills in field settings.
Prerequisite(s):  SERP 400 or SERP 411 or SERP 481.

SERP 484 -- Problems of Drug Abuse  (3 units)
Description:  Survey course for teachers, counselors, and agency workers concerned with drug abuse; examination of community, cultural, and educational approaches to drug use and abuse.
May be repeated:  for credit 1 time (maximum 2 enrollments).

SERP 487 -- Psychosocial, Cultural, and Familial Aspects of Disability  (3 units)
Description:  Exploration of the psychological, sociological, cultural, and familial aspects of disability throughout the lifespan and implications; foundations for empowerment and enhancing self-esteem.
Prerequisite(s):  SERP 465 or SERP 565. Open to SERP majors only.

SERP 493 -- Internship  (1-4 units)
Description:  Specialized work on an individual basis, consisting of training and practice in actual service in a technical, business, or governmental establishment.

SERP 493L -- Legislative Internship  (1-12 units)
Description:  Working experience at the Arizona State Legislature; responsibilities draw upon student's area of major expertise and include preparing written and oral reports, summarizing legislative proposals, and providing information to legislators and legislative committees. Participating programs include but are not limited to: architecture, economics, English, geography and regional development, history, hydrology, journalism, management, management information systems, marketing, political science, psychology, public administration, secondary education, sociology, statistics, and urban planning. Students in other programs are eligible and should consult the department head or, in the case of the James E. Roger's College of Law, the dean, for appropriate arrangements.

Description:  The practical application of theoretical learning within a group setting and involving an exchange of ideas and practical methods, skills, and principles.

SERP 498 -- Senior Capstone  (1-3 units)
Description:  A culminating experience for majors involving a substantive project that demonstrates a synthesis of learning accumulated in the major, including broadly comprehensive knowledge of the discipline and its methodologies. Senior standing required.

SERP 498H -- Honors Thesis  (3 units)
Description:  An honors thesis is required of all the students graduating with honors. Students ordinarily sign up for this course as a two-semester sequence. The first semester the student performs research under the supervision of a faculty member; the second semester the student writes an honors thesis.

SERP 500 -- Foundations of Special Education and Rehabilitation  (3 units)
Description:  Provides beginning graduate students with a knowledge of issues surrounding the fields of special education and rehabilitation. Issues include legal; principles and concepts of assessment; principles of teaching and counseling. Students will examine and develop their personal philosophies regarding assessment of, services to and intervention with individuals with exceptionalities.

SERP 593L -- Legislative Internship  (1-9 units)
Description:  Working experience at the Arizona State Legislature; responsibilities draw upon student's area of major expertise and include preparing written and oral reports, summarizing legislative proposals, and providing information to legislators and legislative committees. Participating programs include but are not limited to: architecture, economics, English, geography and regional development, history, hydrology, journalism, management, management information systems, marketing, political science, psychology, public administration, secondary education, sociology, statistics, and urban planning. Students in other programs are eligible and should consult the department head or, in the case of the James E. Roger's College of Law, the dean, for appropriate arrangements.
