RELI 300 -- Christian Literature and Thought  (3 units)
Description:  Development of Christian thought from the New Testament through the Protestant Reformation.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

RELI 301 -- Catholic Thought in the 20th Century  (3 units)
Description:  Development of Roman Catholic thought beginning with the neo-Thomistic revival under Pope Leo XIII and stressing the documents and theology of the Second Vatican Council.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

Description:  An intensive study of English history from the accession of Edward IV to the Hanoverian dynasty.

RELI 321 -- Women in Judaism  (3 units)
Description:  Images of Jewish women in Jewish and other texts. Texts include religious, historical and literary genres from biblical, medieval, and modern sources. The course will deal with Jewish women as mothers, leaders, stereotypes, and current feminist viewpoints.

Description:  Religion as a social institution with special reference to industrial societies.

RELI 324 -- Women and Religion in the U.S.  (3 units)
Description:  Considers the place of women in multicultural U.S. society by placing them in historical perspective with regard to religious communities. Pursues historical encounters between women and their religions.

RELI 326 -- Religion and Sexuality  (3 units)
Description:  Places questions of religion and sexuality in historical perspective as well as investigating the import which issues of sexuality continue to have for religion and society.

RELI 329 -- Jewish--Christian Relations  (3 units)
Description:  Explores the parallel and intersecting paths that both Jewish and Christian communities have taken toward theologies of self-identity.

RELI 331 -- Taoist Traditions of China  (3 units)
Description:  Intellectual foundations of Taoism in its two classical sources, the Lao Tzu and the Chuang Tzu, and a sampling of the varieties of religious practice which developed later.

RELI 332 -- Jewish Response to the Holocaust  (3 units)
Description:  This course examines the impact of the Holocaust on contemporary Jewish thought. The methodology of the course is interpretive and historical. In the course, students will explore theological and philosophical texts, Holocaust narrative and film, in order to understand the role of the Holocaust in Jewish history. However, the course will not focus on the historical events of the Holocaust. Instead, the course will be arranged thematically into three sections: The introductory section examines the anti-Semitism of the Holocaust in the context of the antagonistic relationship between Judaism and Christianity throughout history.

RELI 333 -- Buddhist Meditation Traditions  (3 units)
Description:  Major forms of Buddhist meditation from both the South Asian and East Asian traditions, with emphasis on the nature of meditation as a variety of religious experience.

RELI 334 -- Islamic Thought  (3 units)
Description:  A consideration of Islam, one of the world's major religions, and the view of the universe and the modes of behavior and values it advocates. Most of the course will be dedicated to an examination of the majority (Sunni) opinion, but some attention will be directed also to the more significant minority (Shi'i, et al.) positions as well. The course has no prerequisite but does build on the information presented in TRAD 101 Middle Eastern Humanities.

Description:  Critical, thematic exegesis of indigenous African and Christian contributions to African American religions. Analyzes role of religion in resisting oppression and racial injustice.

Description:  Interdisciplinary survey of the ancient world's woman-centered or multi-gendered belief systems, social practices, and cultural artifacts from a multi-ethnic perspective. Establishes and examines connections to contemporary literature, the arts, and theories that reconsider "woman and nature," "nature and culture".

Description:  Focuses on the relationship between archaeological investigations and the study of the Bible. Description:  Europe between the 14th and 16th centuries with special emphasis on Italy as the seat of the Renaissance. Topics include the city states, humanism, the Church in an age of Schism and secularization, Renaissance art, the New Monarchies and European exploration and imperialism.

Description:  Traces the origins and nature of Israelite prophecy within its ancient Near Eastern cultural context. Focus on the literary forms of Israelite and Judaic prophecy and on the philosophical issues addressed by several major prophets.

RELI 435 -- Jewish Mysticism  (3 units)
Description:  Surveys the ideology, symbolism, and major themes of Jewish mysticism as evidenced in several prominent mystical texts. The core of this course will be reading the texts in English translation and the development of skills in reading and understanding a Jewish mystical text.

Description:  A culminating experience for majors involving a substantive project that demonstrates a synthesis of learning accumulated in the major, including broadly comprehensive knowledge of the discipline and its methodologies. Senior standing required.

RELI 498H -- Honors Thesis  (3 units)
Description:  An honors thesis is required of all the students graduating with honors. Students ordinarily sign up for this course as a two-semester sequence. The first semester the student performs research under the supervision of a faculty member; the second semester the student writes an honors thesis.
May be repeated:  for a total of 9 units of credit.

Graduate-level requirements include a longer writing project, and an additional class presentation.

Description:  Traces the origins and nature of Israelite prophecy within its ancient Near Eastern cultural context.
