FREN 101 -- Elementary French I  (4 units)
Description:  Listening, speaking, reading, and writing; an introduction to the basic structures and vocabulary of French. Does not count toward French major or minor. Also see FREN 113.

FREN 102 -- Elementary French II  (4 units)

FREN 112 -- Accelerated French I  (6 units)
Description:  FREN 112 is the equivalent of FREN 101 and FREN 102.

FREN 113 -- Intensive French I  (4 units)
Description:  FREN 113 is the equivalent of FREN 101 and FREN 102. (Note: FREN 113 "Intensive" covers the same materials as FREN 112 "Accelerated," which is offered summer only.)
Prerequisite(s):  knowledge of another foreign language at the 305B level or consult department before enrolling.

FREN 195A -- Topics in French Culture, Literature, and Language  (1 unit)
Description:  Are you interested in finding out about French and Italian language, culture, literature? This course is taught by the leading experts in French and Italian at the U of A. About every two weeks a new instructor will discuss with you a new aspect of French or Italian. According to his or her expertise, you may be learning about French or Italian language or culture; you may be exposed to French or Italian literature of many periods, many authors or many types such as short stories, novels, plays, poetry or film.  This is a First-Year Colloquium Course.

Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise such work.

FREN 201 -- Intermediate French I  (4 units)
Description:  Continued skill development; further development of the four language skills.

FREN 202 -- Intermediate French II  (4 units)
Description:  Continued skill development; reinforcement of basic language skills.

FREN 245 -- African Literature in Translation  (3 units)
Description:  Introduction to Francophone African literature coming from the Western part of the African continent, which forms a geographical and cultural entity. Taught in English. Does not court toward fulfillment of language requirement, or the major or minor in French.

FREN 249 -- Images of Africa  (3 units)
Description:  Introduction to African life and culture through explorations in the following areas: history, geography, institutions, the arts, and language and literature. Taught in English. Does not count toward fulfillment of language requirement, or the major or minor in French.

FREN 280 -- Introduction to French Language, Linguistics and Culture  (3 units)
Description:  Introductory course to key concepts in French language, linguistics and culture through a variety of media (textbook, comics, films, Web). This course is taught in English and requires no knowledge of French. Does not count toward fulfillment of language requirement, of the major or minor in French.

Description:  Representative masterpieces of French theater from its origins in the Middle Ages to the contemporary. FREN 302 -- Advanced Composition  (3 units)
Description:  This course stresses written communication. In addition, conversation and reading are targeted as means to inform writing.

FREN 303 -- Practical French Phonetics  (3 units)
Description:  The sound system of French, oriented for the English-speaking American student; intensive practical exercises.

FREN 305A -- Composition and Conversation  (3 units)
Description:  Designed for students who wish to write and speak fluently in everyday idiom; material based on practical current topics. Both FREN 305A and FREN 305B are offered each semester.

FREN 310 -- Spoken French in Cultural Context  (3 units)
Description:  This course is focused almost exclusively on oral communication. The course fosters open-mindedness through informed discussion of commonalities and differences between American and French/Francophone cultures. It enables students to sharpen their oral communication skills.
Prerequisite(s):  FREN 301 or equivalent.

FREN 320 -- Written French in Cultural Context  (3 units)
Description:  This course stimulates intellectual openness and interest in other cultures. It enables students to gain familiarity, experience and confidence in reading and writing French.

FREN 325 -- History of France: Development of the Modern French State, 1815-Present  (3 units)
Description:  Political, socio-economic, and cultural history of modern France from 1815 to the present day, with emphasis placed on French politics and self-identity.
Prerequisite(s):  3 units of any European history course.

FREN 326 -- Writing and Discussion on Current Topics  (3 units)
Description:  Materials used in the course will include one recent novel or collection of short stories, current French newspapers and other Parisian publications, and may include radio, television, films, plays and music. Topics for discussion and composition are derived principally from current activities in Paris of interest to individuals and to the group. Taught in France.

Description:  Definitions and illustrations of the principal types and genres of French literature (poetry, essay, narrative fiction, theater).

FREN 403 -- French Literature of the Middle Ages and the 16th Century  (3 units)
Description:  Survey of French literature from its beginnings to the Renaissance. Definition of literary genres with readings of major texts (in modern French).

Description:  Enhances skills to process information that promotes the understanding and interpretation of the target culture.

FREN 425 -- Paris: Capsule/Capital of French Cultural History  (3 units)
Description:  The cultural history of France surveyed through selected works of literature, art, and architecture. Readings and discussions, in conjunction with faculty-guided visits to historical sites in Paris. Offered in Paris program only.

Description:  An experiment in writing, concerning the means, the raw material at our disposal, and the different literary devices that allow us to achieve it. French students will write in French and English students will write in English.

FREN 454 -- Francophone Literature of the Maghreb and Lebanon  (3 units)
Description:  Francophone literature of Algeria, Lebanon, Morocco and Tunisia.

FREN 456 -- Literature of Belgium  (3 units)
Description:  Historical and the cultural background followed by the literary background in the broader context of French literature. Examines the novel and its different themes, the theater (symbolist, metaphysical, political) and poetry. Also, the works of Simenon, the world renowned author of detective and psychological novels. Taught in French.

FREN 457 -- French Film classics  (3 units)
Description:  Study of selected film classics, from the origins of the cinema (les freres Lumiere) in 1895 to the 20th century. Draws on the resources of the various Paris cinematheques.

FREN 461A -- French Linguistics  (3 units)
Description:  This course will introduce the study of French from a linguistic point of view. The area to be covered will be chosen from: phonetics, phonologyn morphology, syntax, semantics, dialect and social variation, pragmatics, discourse analysis.

FREN 462 -- Linguistics and the Study of Literature  (3 units)
Description:  Linguistic methods in the analysis of literature and implications of literary language for linguistic theory; detailed consideration of prosody, metaphor, narrative technique and irony.

FREN 467 -- Topics in French Linguistics  (3 units)
Description:  Examines in detail current topics in the linguistic analysis of French. May be repeated when topics vary. Taught in French with readings in French and English.

FREN 470 -- Advanced Grammar and Usage  (3 units)
Description:  Structural analysis of spoken and written French, with emphasis on structural patterns and attention to contrasts with English.

FREN 481 -- Technology & Foreign Language Learning  (3 units)
Description:  This course focuses on the use of technology in foreign language learning. It has three parts: 1) theory, how computers fit within concepts of L@ acquisition; 2) pedagogy, how computers have been used in the classroom & 3) application, the design & implementation a segment of instruction.

FREN 483 -- Materials Design  (3 units)
Description:  This course focuses on how to design and implement modern foreign/second language instruction materials. We look at language acquisition issues as well as pedagogical issues. Participants also are asked to design and implement a segment of instruction.

FREN 496A -- Seminar: French Language, Culture and Literature  (3 units)
Description:  The development and exchange of scholarly information, usually in a small group setting. The scope of work shall consist of research by course registrants, with the exchange of the results of such research through discussion, reports, and/or papers.

FREN 498 -- Senior Capstone  (1-3 units)
Description:  A culminating experience for majors involving a substantive project that demonstrates a synthesis of learning accumulated in the major, including broadly comprehensive knowledge of the discipline and its methodologies. Senior standing required.

FREN 498H -- Honors Thesis  (3 units)
Description:  An honors thesis is required of all the students graduating with honors. Students ordinarily sign up for this course as a two-semester sequence. The first semester the student performs research under the supervision of a faculty member; the second semester the student writes an honors thesis.

FREN 500 -- French for Reading  (1 unit)
Description:  A one-semester course that permits rapid acquisition of reading skills. Even with no prior study of French, students by the end of a semester are able to read and understand materials written in French in the standard literature and professional journals of their field of interest. This course cannot count toward any graduate program of study.

FREN 510 -- Introduction to Graduate Study in French Language and Literature  (3 units)
Description:  Problems and methods of advanced research in French language and literature. Use of specialized library resources and computerized data bases. Issues in the history, sociology, and politics of the professional practice of language and literature study in American universities. Taught in English or French.

FREN 511 -- Topics in Literary History, Criticism, and Theory  (3 units)
Description:  Current, recent, and traditional ways of analyzing and interpreting literary texts and the cultural contents in which they are produced, with emphasis on French, and attention to understanding various means by which knowledge of literary issues is transmitted to others. May be repeated when topics vary.

Description:  Studies in the French Renaissance, including theater, fiction, poetry, essay. Analysis of the main literary, artistic, and socio-cultural movements in France during the 16th century-the French Renaissance.

Description:  Studies in the French Enlightenment, including theater; fiction; essays. Analysis of the main literary, artistic, and socio-cultural movements in France and in Europe during the 18th century-the French Enlightenment.

Description:  Examines various aspects of literary works ranging from poetry, the theater, the novel and critical essays. Studies in French Romanticism and Realism.

Description:  This course is designed to develop understanding and appreciation of particular genres and topics. Taught in French. Graduale-level requirements include stronger emphasis in individual research for graduate students (secondary readings mandatory). More substantial assignments (length and expectations of quality) for graduate students.

FREN 543 -- Francophone Literature and Culture  (3 units)
Description:  Designed to develop understanding and appreciation of postcolonial literature of French expression and to expand knowledge of Francophone World. Taught in French Graduate-level requirements include more emphasis on individual research (reading of/reports on secondary sources mandatory). More substantial assignments (in terms of lenth and quality).

FREN 548 -- The Theory and Practice of Writing  (3 units)

Examines the novel and its different themes, the theater (symbolist, metaphysical, political) and poetry. Also, the works of Simenon, the world renowned author of detective and psychological novels. Taught in French. Graduate-level requirements include a term paper written in French. Taught in French.

FREN 562 -- Linguistics and the Study of Literature  (3 units)
Description:  Linguistic methods in the analysis of literature and implications of literary language for linguistic theory; detailed consideration of prosody, metaphor, narrative technique and irony. Graduate-level requirements include a greater number of assignments and a higher level of performance.

FREN 567 -- Topics in French Linguistics  (3 units)
Description:  Examines in detail current topics in the linguistic analysis of French. May be repeated when topics vary. Taught in French with readings in French and English. Graduate-level requirements include higher level of oral and written work.

FREN 573 -- Semiotics and Language  (3 units)
Description:  Introduction to semiotics, survey of major figures and trends. Saussure and structuralism, Jakobson and functionalism/poetics, Pierce and pragmaticism. Focus on what these trends tell us about language. Students' written work will represent students' specific interests.

FREN 579 -- Issues/Methods in Post-Second Foreign Language Teaching/ Learning  (3 units)
Description:  Methods of post-secondary foreign language pedagogy. Discussion of broader issues of second language acquisition learner variables, including learning styles; the history of foreign language, education standards for foreign language learning and post-secondary teaching as a career.

FREN 581 -- Technology & Foreign Language Learning  (3 units)
Description:  This course focuses on the use of technology in foreign language learning. It has three parts: 1) theory, how computers fit within concepts of L@ acquisition; 2) pedagogy, how computers have been used in the classroom & 3) application, the design & implementation a segment of instruction. Graduate Level requirements include an oral presentation lasting 15 minutes. A reasearch paper of 10-12 pages. A software evaluation of 2-3 pages.

FREN 582 -- Writing in Second Language Classrooms  (3 units)
Description:  Theories of writing across languages and cultures from cognitive and sociopolitical perspectives. Writing theory as it relates to critical thinking skills and skills of social critique are explored. Readings and discussions address; intellectual analytical procedures involved in writing, social and political contexts within which second language writing occurs, the interdependence of first and second language literacy's, the interrelationships between theories of literacy and second language writing theory and pedagogy, the manifestations of cultural variation in nonnative writing, and a multicultural theory of second language writing and pedagogy.
Prerequisite(s):  graduate status.

FREN 583 -- Materials Design  (3 units)
Description:  This course focuses on how to design and implement modern foreign/second language instruction materials. We look at language acquisition issues as well as pedagogical issues. Participants also are asked to design and implement a segment of instruction. Graduate-level requirements include two oral presentations; a research paper 10-12 pages; a prospectus for teaching materials.

FREN 587 -- Testing and Evaluation in Foreign/Second Language Programs  (3 units)
Description:  Introduction to fundamental concepts, principles and problems of psychometric measurement relevant to FL/L2 learning. Types of tests and their uses, test construction, analysis and interpretation of results.

FREN 593 -- Internship  (1-6 units)
Description:  Specialized work on an individual basis, consisting of training and practice in actual service in a technical, business, or governmental establishment.

FREN 596J -- Second Language Acquisition Research  (3 units)
Description:  The development and exchange of scholarly information, usually in a small group setting. The scope of work shall consist of research by course registrants, with the exchange of the results of such research through discussion, reports, and/or papers.
Prerequisite(s):  ENGL 506, ENGL 613, ENGL 615, or the equivalent of these courses.

FREN 596Y -- Topics in Second Language Acquisition and Teaching  (1-12 units)
Description:  This graduate seminar is designed to give a weekly topical treatment to a number of pertinent issues in teaching academic writing to linguistically and culturally diverse learners. Through a comprehensive overview of the research base in academic writing in ESL, this course will explore pedagogical implications of L2 writing theories and research findings by engaging students in a number of projects and tasks.Topics vary with instructor.
