Description:  Continuation of Intermediate Conversation and Readings in Modern Standard Arabic with emphasis on oral and written comprehension and expression.

ARB 406 -- Advanced Arabic II  (4 units)
Description:  Continuation of "Advanced Arabic I", and builds on proficiency acquired in the last five semesters of Arabic; emphasis on oral and written comprehension and expression.

Prerequisite(s):  ARB 405, passing placement test to determine eligibility.

ARB 424A -- Conversational Levantine Arabic  (3 units)
Description:  Extensive oral drill with emphasis on the acquisition of facility in normal conversation and comprehension.

Description:  History and structure of the Arabic language in its various forms.

ARB 427A -- Colloquial Moroccan Arabic  (3 units)
Description:  Moroccan Arabic is a designation used for a continuum of dialects spoken in Morocco. An alternate designation for this dialect cluster is Maghribi Colloquial Arabic. There are 18,800,000 speakers throughout Morocco according to the Ethnologue, and 742,000 elsewhere.

Prerequisite(s):  ARB 101 or equivalent.

ARB 427B -- Colloquial Moroccan Arabic II  (3 units)
Description:  This is a continuation of ARB 427A-527A. The focus is on spoken rather than Standard written Arabic, and will target oral/aural skills, speaking and listening. Knowledge of Arabic orthography is not required, as the text is in phonetic transcription.

ARB 439A -- Egyptian Arabic  (3 units)
Description:  Introduction to the Cairene dialect. Phonology, common greetings, basic vocabulary and grammar.

ARB 448 -- Arabic Literature in English  (3 units)
Description:  Historical survey of Arabic literature of the Middle East and Mediterranean world, with readings in English translations.

ARB 495A -- Readings in Modern Arabic Prose  (3 units)

ARB 498 -- Senior Capstone  (1-3 units)
Description:  A culminating experience for majors involving a substantive project that demonstrates a synthesis of learning accumulated in the major, including broadly comprehensive knowledge of the discipline and its methodologies. Senior standing required.

ARB 499 -- Independent Study  (1-6 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise such work.

ARB 505 -- Advanced Arabic I  (4 units)
Description:  Continuation of Intermediate Conversation and Readings in Modern Standard Arabic with emphasis on oral and written comprehension and expression. Graduate-level requirements include organizing the Arabic club which meets weekly at Starbuck's. Each student will take charge of at least three meetings, organize activities for the meeting, then submit a report in Arabic describing the event.

ARB 506 -- Advanced Arabic II  (4 units)

ARB 524A -- Conversational Levantine Arabic  (3 units)

Graduate-level requirements include the ability to speak with sufficient structural vocabulary to participate in most formal and informal conversations, requiring a mastery of at least 120 additional vocabulary items.

ARB 524B -- Conversational Levantine Arabic  (3 units)

ARB 526 -- Introduction to Arabic Linguistics  (3 units)
