(3 units) Description: This introductory theory course will allow graduate students to root the discourses that shape contemporary research and practice in art and visual culture education. Theory is broadly defined and inter-disciplinary and may include but is not limited to critical theory, feminist theory, semiotics, aesthetic theory, and psychoanalysis. In particular, students will encounter current theoretical debates in art and visual culture education within the frame of the history of art and visual culture education and thinking about art and visual culture. These selected intercessions will support students as they trace the trajectories of and inquiries surrounding these discourses in art and visual culture and make decisions regarding their own research and practice. This course complements ARE 530, 630, and 633, and provides opportunities for students to develop their own theoretical perspectives to apply to their research program.
