Course Description

This class will be a comprehensive survey of the biology of the mammary gland. Lectures will cover: 1) basic aspects such as anatomy and development of the mammary gland, biochemistry and hormone regulation of milk synthesis and regulation of gene expression in the mammary cells; 2) practical aspects such as the impact of lactation on nutrition, reproduction, and diseases. Lactation in the dairy cow provides the primary context to the course, but examples from other mammals including humans will be used.
