Course Description
Anthropology 472/572 is an advanced undergraduate and graduate course on zooarchaeology and taphonomy. This course teaches students how animal skeletal remains from archaeological sites are analyzed, how to investigate the circumstances of faunal assemblage formation, and how animal remains may inform upon topics such as human diet, hunting, animal husbandry, and climate in the past, as well as conservation biology in the present. No prior training is needed for entering this course. This course involves a combination of hands-on study of animal skeletons to familiarize students with the methods through which zooarchaeological data are generated; as well as readings and analytical homework activities intended to enable students to experience the process of getting from faunal data to research results.
