This course focuses on the art and architecture of the empires of the early Middle Ages (Roman Christian, Carolingian, Byzantine) and of the so-called \"Barbarians\" (Celts, Anglo-Saxons, Goths) in the 4th to 10th centuries. Graduate-level requirements include an in-depth research paper on a single aspect of current scholarly interest.
