Course Description
Galapagos Marine Ecology is a three-week summer course taught on the island of San Cristobal, Galapagos, Ecuador. Students conduct their own marine ecology research investigations under the guidance of the instructors, using the natural reef as a living \"laboratory\". Students are introduced to the local history and culture of the people who live on San Cristobal and the environmental issues that predominate in this unique world heritage site. There is a required service component helping children from a local school with English language instruction. This course is designed to meet the needs of diverse audiences: K-12 teachers interested in incorporating the Galapagos into their classroom instruction, other interested graduate students, and upper division undergraduate students. Students enrolled for the first time will take the course for 3 units. Students may repeat the course up to 3 times for 1-6 units. Graduate-level requirements include the creation of a lesson plan for the classroom.
