Principles of crystallography, crystal-chemistry, X-ray diffraction and optical mineralogy. Phase diagrams and phase transitions in the Earth's mantle. Systematic mineralogy. Atomic structure, and physical and optical properties of common rock forming minerals. Identification of minerals and determination of mineral compositions.
