Course Description

Principles of Igneous and Metamorphic petrology; introductory concepts of phase equilibrium, thermodynamics and diffusion kinetics. Emplacement of igneous rocks; distribution, and origins of igneous and metamorphic rocks; rocks in their tectonic settings and implications. Principles of thermometry and barometry. Examination of rocks in hand specimen and thin section; electron microprobe analysis and applications to P-T-t calculations.
