Course Description
This course provides a historical examination of the honor, shame, violence, and freedom of conscience of the political, cultural, and racial persecution in the Spanish and American Inquisitions between 1478-1834. Students will be introduced to various phenomena associated with the history and cultures of early modern Spain and Portugal (which was ruled by Spain from 1580 to 1640) and their empires. Students will also learn about the phenomena of anti-Judaism and Judeophobic racism as they were manifested in early modern Iberian and Ibero-American life.
