Course Description
This course will describe the major causes of morbidity and mortality in the United States and the public health interventions used to address them. Contemporary public health issues, trends, and controversies will be discussed for major infectious diseases, chronic diseases, environmental-related conditions, substance abuse, occupational diseases and behavior-related conditions. The evidence for and against the effectiveness of public health interventions, as well as the political, legal and ethical controversies that arise in public health practice, will be covered. The course will be based on actual public health cases and involve active student participation in problem solving and involvement of outside guests who work in public health.
