Course Description
Community nutrition is a discipline that strives to support the nutrition, health and overall well-being of communities at the local, state, national and global level. The course explores the role of public health nutrition in assessing the health, nutrition status, and quality of life of communities. Students in this course learn the process of health promotion and nutrition program design, implementation and evaluation. Students will explore how the social determinants of health influence health outcomes and nutrition status at the community level and identify health equity strategies to program design to address community nutrition needs. Students will analyze the social, political, historical and environmental factors impacting nutrition and health in various segments of the population. All topics explored in this course will be examined at the intersection of multiple community lived experiences, students will exercise critical thinking in learning about current events related to public health, nutrition policy, food insecurity, diet culture, food assistance programs, and learn advocacy strategies to address issues related to health and nutrition.
