Course Description

This course introduces students to several qualitative research approaches. Students will appreciate the disciplinary foundations, epistemologies, ontologies, and methodologies of various qualitative research approaches. Additionally, the use of theory to guide qualitative research, and theory derivation as a research outcome, will be presented. Methods for data collection and management across qualitative research approaches will be introduced and practiced. Several procedures for analyzing qualitative data will be compared. Finally, techniques for establishing and evaluating the rigor of individual qualitative research studies and ethical considerations when engaging with these types of research will be considered. Contemporary and historic qualitative research studies will be used to exemplify the contributions that qualitative research has made for advancing nursing and other health-related sciences.
