Course Description
This course uses a process driven learning approach to develop the basic competencies necessary to insure a smooth transition from classroom to acute care rotations. Ideally students taking this class will gain confidence for small group discussions and public speaking, understand basic patient medication safety information applicable to any acute care setting, understand the basics of protected health information retrieval with the skills necessary to prioritize and present the information to a patient care team, and to retain fundamental and important concepts including each of the following content areas common to all acute care settings: acid-base disturbances, fluid management, vasoactive medications, analgesia/sedation, infectious diseases and nutrition. The majority of classroom time is spent resolving practice issues in small groups with the assistance of highly trained acute care pharmacists.
