MIC340 - Introduction to Biotechnology
Course ID
027233
Course Description
Biotechnology is the use of biological systems to transform raw materials into useful products. Humans have been practicing biotechnology for much longer than the term 'biotechnology' has been around, using yeasts to make alcohol from fruits and grains, for example. However, modern biotechnology is dominated by the use of genetically modified organisms. In this course, we will take an in-depth look at how genes are manipulated and moved from organism to organism, creating genetically modified microbes, plants, and animals, including humans. We will also explore many different applications of biotechnology and discuss the ethics of genetic manipulation.
