Course Description
Goals:
1. The student will develop clinical skills in patient evaluation.
2. Learn the natural history, methods of diagnosis and treatment for a wide variety of neoplastic disorders.
3. Become acquainted with the principles of the employment of radiation in the cure and palliation of disease. The technical aspects will not be stressed.
Format:
Each student will work with a series of faculty member preceptors on a rotating basis. Selected patients will be worked up and followed through their evaluation and treatment. Students will be given specific reading assignments appropriate for each patient. The student has the opportunity to see patients with a wide variety of tumors: gynecologic tumors, head and neck tumors, lymphomas, as well as many patients with lung, breast, prostate and other tumors. Approximately 60 patients per day are currently being seen, including new patients, follow-up patients and patients under treatment. Students will participate in the wide range of teaching conferences which occur in the department and will also participate in interdisciplinary conferences which occur. Students may work out individualized programs with specific preceptors if they wish.
