Course Description
This course explores the nature and sources of cultural differences, with a focus on international comparisons. We begin by examining the content of culture: symbolic systems, rituals, and beliefs. Next we concentrate on the production and distribution of cultural content by institutions such as media, schools, and organized religion. Then we study how people receive, use, and transform cultural content in daily life. Throughout the course, we will evaluate competing explanations for how and why cultures differ.
