Course Description
This rotation is meant to provide a comprehensive experience for students that are interested in cardiothoracic surgery. Students will develop an understanding of the preoperative clinical assessment of the cardiac and thoracic patient, intraoperative exposure to complex CT surgical procedures, and postoperative management of the patient in the cardiac ICU. Students will become proficient in the indications, workup and postoperative care of common cardiac and thoracic surgical conditions. Students will assist in placement and removal of chest tubes, central lines, and PA catheters. Students will also learn basic surgical skill including saphenous vein harvest, wound closure, principle for the handling of vascular tissues, and basics of cardiopulmonary bypass, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.
