The objective of this course is to provide a basic understanding of environmental microbiology including; the functional diversity of microorganisms in the environment and in relation to human welfare and ecosystem health, microbial interactions with pollutants in the environment, and new advances in environmental microbiology. Topics covered include microbial environments, detection of microbes and their activities in the environment, microbial biogeochemistry, and bioremediation. We will briefly cover exciting new topics that have recently been discovered including recently-discovered 'missing links' in the tree of life and the role of bacteriophage in the environment.
