Course Description
The scope of information required to effectively practice surgery and to advance the field through research and scholarly activities ranges from fundamental basic science (e.g. molecular and cell biology, immunobiology, physiology, pathology and pharmacology) to clinical studies of diagnosis, and therapeutics. Principles of Surgery is a didactic course in which these topics are covered over a two-year period (Yr 1: Fall Semester, Spring Semester, Yr 2: Fall Semester, Spring Semester) in lecture format with time allotted for questions and discussion. The lectures are typically, but not exclusively, given by faculty of the Department of Surgery. The course uses 'Textbook of Surgery' by Sabiston for reading assignments prior to each meeting. Supplemental readings and PowerPoint handouts are emailed to the participants prior to each session.
