Course Description
This course explores ideas in the history of political philosophy and political economy about the division of labor, the basis of social cooperation, views about economic production and exchange, and the distribution of wealth. We will start at the beginning: Plato's and Aristotle's views on economics and the division of labor. Along the way we will examine the views of, among others, St. Thomas Aquinas, John Locke, Francois Quesany, Bernard Mandeville, David Hume, Adam Smith, Jeremy Bentham, Thomas Robert Malthus, David Ricardo, Nassau Senior, John Stuart Mill, Robert Owen, Karl Marx, W.S. Jevons, John Maynard Keynes and F.A. Hayek. We conclude with a debate about the nature of distributive justice. Writing is a key element of this course.
