Course Description
This 2-week elective will be focused on clinical evaluations and diagnostic procedures under the guidance of ophthalmologists in outpatient clinics located at the main University facility at Alvernon Way as well as at the Veterans Hospital and UPH Kino. Special emphasis is placed on evaluating and understanding the pathophysiology of common disorders such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, conjunctivitis, strabismus, and amblyopia useful for students planning careers in general medicine such as family practice and pediatrics. Students will learn how to evaluate ocular complaints, examine the macula, optic nerve, and retina, assess visual acuity and motility problems, diagnose the red eye, and evaluate the risks of glaucoma. Skills useful in examination of the traumatized eye, removal of simple external foreign bodies, diagnosis and treatment of the dry eye, retinal disease, corneal and contact lens problems, pupillary abnormalities, and common lid problems are emphasized. In addition, students will be introduced to treatments of the 'lazy eye' (amblyopia), diabetic retinopathy, conjunctivitis, and other common eye problems such as cataracts, retinal detachments, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration.
