Course Description
This course is focused on the relationships between psychological and physical functioning, i.e., the interplay between emotion, cognition, behavior, and the health/dysfunction of body systems. The course covers: 1) an introduction to different models of the pathways linking psychological and physical functioning; 2) the mechanisms by which psychological processes affect physical health (including the role of stress/emotion, health-related behaviors, and illness-related behaviors); 3) the psychosocial aspects of common medical illnesses; and 4) empirically-supported approaches to health-related assessment and intervention. Graduate-level requirements include an additional paper describing a research proposal integrating a topic/method covered in class with the student's own field of study.
