DNC303 - Yoga for Dance Majors

Course ID

Course Description

This course will incorporate some of the basic work of Jimmy Barkan Yoga and give dancers tools to better understand the use of breath in order to facilitate a more feeling-centered approach to their placement, balance and technique in general. Being conscious of the mind is an important skill to acquire as a mover. It is often necessary for dancers to let the mind go and give into a more body or feeling centered approach to movement. This is most easily achieved through breath. Applying yogic principles to a dancer's technique in all disciplines of dance allows for dancers to learn new ways to commit more fully to their movement. In addition to increased breath awareness, an emphasis on flexibility, and an in-depth study of a dancer's placement through asanas (yoga poses) will be included in this course. This class will be given in a warm room to more easily facilitate stretch, give dancers an opportunity to get more deeply into their practice, and prevent injury.
