Course Description

This course introduces graduate students to theories of ideology and ritual in shaping political contentiousness. Explore theories of ideologies for the understandings they provide of ways ideas are converted to ritual and myth to unify or fragment social orders as political communications gives way to what Charles Tilly, and others term \"contentious politics\" that rely on ritualizing interactions within and across reform movements. It examines the means by which ideology and ritual combine to make political interactions performances of ridicule and risibility aimed at excluding ideas, persons, and groups that act to transcend allegiance to binary commitments.
