This course explores cognitive, social, and political consequences of humans increasing reliance on formal classification schemes as key means by which they identify problems and devise solutions that some judge rational and objective and others irrational and inhumane. It explores the ways a multitude of national and international formal and informal schemes intertwine in practices to direct decision making in what Bowker and Star term, 'classification society.'
