Course Description
This course is the second of three core courses leading to eligibility for advanced practice and national certification as a family psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP); it builds on the knowledge and clinical skills gained in NURS 629A, Advanced Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing I. Students will expand and apply advanced mental health assessment skills across the lifespan. They will delve deeper into advanced techniques in assessment, differential diagnosis, and both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic management of mental health conditions. Emphasis is placed on expanding bio-psycho-social and cultural assessment and management, with a focus on health promotion, protection, disease prevention, and treatment. The course includes 180 clinical practicum hours, during which students work towards autonomous practice, gaining skills in psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, and providing direct care to those with psychiatric-mental health needs.
