This course examines the history of visual effects in filmed entertainment (film, television, and video), from the practical effects of early film, theatre, and television to the contemporary digital revolution. Special attention is paid to the role of visual effects in genres, visual storytelling, and industrial practices, as well as theories of realism, narrative, and spectacle.
