Course Description
This course focuses on specific research-based practices, pedagogies, and perspectives in early childhood and elementary mathematics education. This course emphasizes the ways that children make sense of mathematical ideas and concepts through direct personal and integrated learning experiences. This course examines components of effective mathematics instruction in early childhood and elementary classrooms including: developmentally appropriate learning environments, use of models and concrete materials, fostering connections between students home, community and school experiences, promoting mathematical discourse, supporting emerging bilingual students in mathematics, and strategies for assessing and supporting children's mathematical thinking. Additionally, future teachers will become familiar with the Arizona State Standards for Mathematics and the AZ Early Learning Standards for Mathematics.
