Course Description

The student will gain knowledge in basic outpatient pediatric and adolescent medicine as well as learn how homeless families, uninsured, and itinerant patients access the healthcare system. Additional interests regarding advocacy, teen health, teenage parenting, border health and community outreach can be supported.

Clinical Skills: Goals To learn basic pediatric/adolescent history taking and communication skills. To learn the basics of adolescent and pediatric examination. To learn about the basic screening tools used for adolescent, pediatric, and at risk youths. To learn the basics of sports physicals and school preparedness Knowledge: Goals To learn about the most common physical ailments affecting homeless teens and children. To learn about the basic stages of development. To learn about the local resources available to homeless persons. To learn the State laws governing practice on adolescent patients. To learn the basic categories of advocacy and the broader roles and responsibilities assumed by physicians who work with vulnerable populations.
