Course Description

This course focuses on the development and testing of behavioral interventions. Theory-driven approaches to selecting the intervention, control condition and measures are emphasized as well as the design, conduct, analysis and interpretation of results of randomized clinical trials (RCTs). Alternatives to RCT for testing interventions are discussed. Planning for application to practice of tested interventions is highlighted. The content includes, but is not limited to, issues of random assignment, blinding, baseline assessment, recruitment, data collection, data management, and concepts of intervention fidelity. The ethics of intervention studies are discussed including assessing and reporting adverse events. Participant adherence is included with discussion on intention to treat analysis in the context of efficacy or effectiveness studies.
