Course Description

This course is designed to teach the philosophy, elements, principles, foundational skills, and techniques of Motivational Interviewing to Master's Students in the Counseling and Mental Health Program. Motivational Interviewing, developed by William R. Miller, Ph.D. and Stephen Rollnick, Ph.D. \"is a directive, client-centered counseling style for eliciting behavior change by helping clients to explore and resolve ambivalence\" (Rollnick & Miller, 1995). Motivational Interviewing has been applied with a variety of populations, including adolescents and young adults, in addiction and mental health treatment, health care, corrections, and social services.

This course is intended to supplement and build upon the basic counseling skills students acquired in SERP 546.

Development of specific Motivational Interviewing skills and techniques applicable to clients/students in rehabilitation, mental health, and school counseling settings will be emphasized in classroom lectures and discussions, during viewings of instructional DVDs, and in Motivational Interviewing practice sessions. Opportunities to explore Motivational Interviewing techniques for addressing racially-, culturally-, and disability-related concerns will also be provided. Finally, students will learn to assess their own as well as their peers' proficiency in using Motivational Interviewing skills and techniques.
