Course Description

\"The Times They Are A-Changin\" is the title of a Bob Dylan song from 1964. This captures the emerging mood in America during this decade of transformation. The various popular musical styles developed during this era were a reflection of the social, cultural, religious, political and sexual changes in our society. This course will examine the context in which that music was made, exploring the unique style of pop music in the Sixties that reflect a broader set of social values. Students will explore American rock, folk, jazz, and blues traditions. The focus will be on leaders such as Bob Dylan, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, and the Doors.
