Course Description
This course will explore the political, social, and economic complexities of late 20th and early 21st century Globalization through movies. We will explore films such as Dirty Pretty Things, Flight of the Red Balloon, Babel, Demonlover, Syriana, and The Constant Gardner, to name a few, to see how state and non-state actors are increasingly linked by emerging global forces. Moving beyond the terms, \"national cinema,\" \"foreign film,\" and \"world cinema,\" we will also investigate how films such \"Batman Begins,\" \"Looper,\" and \"Like Someone in Love,\" are produced via international crews and financing. The class will consider a wide range of issues relating to the effects of globalization and the growing sense of cosmopolitanism such as global consumerism, multinational corporations, postnationalism, international crime such as human trafficking, and the murky web of global terrorism.
