Course Description

Goals/Objectives: Learning to care for young athletes and Pediatric Sports Medicine patients will be a critical skill throughout residency and the primary care career. The Pediatric Sports Medicine rotation combines general musculoskeletal sports medicine with concussion care, fracture care, and care of athletes with chronic illness. You will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to diagnose and treat the majority of sports problems seen in your clinic, with special experience dedicated to the athlete, wellness, nutrition, and maximization of function.
Format: The Elective will consist of clinical experience, didactics, weekly conferences, and optional sports/event coverage opportunities. The core clinical duties will be at the pediatric sports medicine office located at the PANDAS Center of the pediatric specialty clinic. Here patient care is focused on a pediatric only population providing care for common sports injuries such as concussions, overuse injuries, and acute fractures or MSK injuries. Several half days a week will also be spent at other clinics to diversify the experience. These clinics include pediatric orthopedics, Sports PT/Rehab, MSK radiology, as well as orthopedic sports, hand and ankle speciality clinics. There will be weekly sports and MSK radiology conferences/didactics as well as requirement to develop a case presentation by the end of the rotation which can be submitted to AMSSM for presentation. Optional experiences will include TUSD high school sports event coverage, U of A coverage, and training rooms.
