Course Description
This course examines the social life of penality, broadly defined, in the US context. Grounded in the core theoretical traditions in the sociology of punishment and situated within the history of American penal regimes, the course pays particular attention to dissecting the relationships across legitimate force and the reproduction of social inequalities; politics and policy; crime prevention and crime control; and punishment proper and blurred penal boundaries.
