SOC449 - Introduction to Biodemography
Course ID
039958
Course Description
This course introduces students to the study of biodemography. During the semester, students will explore fundamental concepts, general theoretical perspectives, and related empirical research to understand how society \"gets under the skin\" to shape or structure human biology. The course begins with an overview discussion of biodemography and important biological concepts like allostatic load and telomeres. We then devote the remaining semester to examining biological links to a range of social forces, including aging and the life course, sex and gender, race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status, social relationships, religious involvement, neighborhood context, and income inequality. The primary aim of the course is to provide opportunities for students to make fascinating connections between social processes and biological processes through carefully selected readings, lectures, in-class discussions, and examinations.
