Course Description
In this course students will learn the principles of companion animal behavior for the three most common companion animals in the United States (dogs, cats and horses). Basic principles will be emphasized using real world examples of companion animals in an applied setting. Students will learn about species-specific behavior for each of the three companion animals and how to use this information to improve animal welfare. Topics covered will include mechanisms and function of behavior; proximate and ultimate causes of behavior; the relationship between genetics, environment and behavior; role of animal cognition and learning on behavior; the etiology and manifestation of abnormal/maladaptive behaviors; and the effect of the constrained companion animal environment on behavior.
