Course Description

The course objective is to understand the role of finance in society-the good, the bad, and the ugly. The course will focus on four broad topics: Understanding finance's role in economic development and opportunity, how speculative bubbles arise and affect society, the \"sleazy side\" (Shiller's words) of finance (including scams and potential exploitation of the poor), and topics related to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) investing (including theoretical arguments, impact investing, divestment, microfinance, and corporate activism).
