In this course students will apply the principles of primate behavior and management to problems commonly encountered in captive settings, including zoos, research facilities, sanctuaries, private collections, and entertainment industry. Specifically, students will be challenged to use their knowledge of the naturalistic ecology, biology, behavior and psychology of nonhuman primates and captive management to identify potential solutions to improving the lives of captive primates, so as to be consistent with legal guidelines and to minimize the adverse effects of captive conditions. Students will get the opportunity to directly observe one or more species of captive primates, and learn how to record and assess behavior in the captive setting. As a result, students will have a first-hand understanding of how the conditions of captivity influence behavior and how adverse effects can be minimized.
