This course analyzes specific human rights concepts across different regions, societies, cultures, and political frameworks. Even specific human rights like the right to health likely mean something different for people in significantly different contexts. How are these differing understandings manifest? How might they lead to different interpretations and meanings of what human rights actually \"are\" or how they are understood and applied? What does that mean for a universal system of human rights, especially as human rights are interpreted by international bodies operating with supposed universal standards? By thinking about the context of human rights, specifically to examine how seminal human rights ideas and ideals are understood in different cultures and societies, we can achieve a broader understanding of human rights, leading to better application and enforcement of desired standards. May be repeated for a maximum of six credits.
