Course Description
This course focuses on fundamentals of language and linguistics for teachers and how these theories inform practice in early childhood and elementary education. The courses addresses theories of first and second language acquisition, early language development including the sounds of language, the grammatical structures of English, sociolinguistic variation and connections to culture and identity. The meaning of language, the relation between oral language development and concepts of print, are examined along with issues stemming from language diversity. For prospective teachers, the course focuses on developing asset-based perspective about the language varieties and resources that students bring to schools and classrooms.
