Course Description

The focus of this course is the role of the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in screening, assessment and diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder in the pediatric population Through didactic and clinical experiences, this course provides an overview of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Content addresses the natural history, etiology, rising prevalence, risk factors, and core features. Taking a developmental approach, students begin case management and follow a family through screening, diagnosis and treatment planning. Key information is elaborated through case studies. The course highlights the important and evolving role of pediatric nurse practitioners in the prevalence, etiology, screening, assessment and diagnosis of ASD in the pediatric patient. Clinical experiences focus on screening and diagnosis of the pediatric patient with ASD. A clinical practicum experience allows the student to apply didactic content.
