Course Description
The course will provide an overview of pathogenic bacteria, viruses and fungi that are important in human infectious diseases. The content will serve as a basis to understanding the actions of antimicrobial and antiviral medications that will be covered in pharmacology and therapeutics. Taxonomy is science of classification, nomenclature, and identification of living organisms. Applied to microorganisms, this includes bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa. This course will cover common etiologic agents of infectious diseases in humans with emphasis on pathogenic bacteria and fungi. Students are expected to know the names of pathogenic organisms and viruses and how they are classified. Students will learn about common infectious diseases and their etiologic agents for a given bacteria, fungi, virus or parasite, students will be able to provide the common disease that they cause, and list a few major facts about that disease.
