Course ID

Course Description

This course will examine state policies that affect specific groups in Arizona public [and charter] schools, including English language learners, Latino/a, Indigenous, refugee students, and others. We will analyze the ideological foundations that underlie state language and education policies, and explore the reasons why they have been enacted. We will also connect decision-making about language and education curriculum and pedagogies to a number of related issues (for example, immigration, school funding, and ethnic studies). In addition, students will have the opportunity to read a number of literary works related to Arizona, including non-fiction, short stories and poetry by local writers.
