In this elective students will examine the social production of health inequities in the United States, using the lens of social hierarchies of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, language, gender, and ability. This examination of the history of health inequities will take place through guest lectures from subject matter experts, audio-visual resources (e.g. documentaries, oral histories), and readings from the history of medicine. In course assignments, students will be asked to critically analyze taken-for-granted disparities in health and access to health care using in-class and external sources. This course will examine the histories of minority identities that experience health inequity by examining historical contexts and intersectional identities. Topics will include histories of: eugenics and reproductive control; medical research; medical education; population surveillance; scientific racism; institutionalization; colonialism; and the gender binary.
